People who know Cas well describe him as perpetually tenacious. It’s nearly impossible to shake him from a goal once he’s set his mind to it. He’s optimistic, sociable, and empathetic.
History:
A country boy at heart, Cas grew up on his mother’s farm. He’d say it his mom’s farm, even though she never farmed it. It was her birthright, the only good thing she got from her father. Thankfully, the law had decided that she did own it, and that’s why they stayed when she kicked his dad out. His sister always argued that it was their dad’s, because he had farmed it.
He remembers his parents being madly in love, soulmates by every definition. That was, however, until one summer day when he was four and he decided to play on parked farm machinery. An infection and numerous surgeries eventually led to an amputation of the bottom half of his left leg. After that, it was like a crack had formed between his parents. It wasn’t until later that his mom finally opened up and told him about how she noticed her husband’s treatment of her son had changed.
In any case, Cas adapted well to his prosthetic, finished high school, and moved to the city to pursue a career in journalism. While taking classes, he wrote freelance. And during his third year, he saw a deadline for a story approaching, and his contacts falling through.
So he took matters into his own hands.
Most of the stories he did were on corporate wrongdoing, and this was no different. The article was written, but he wanted photographic evidence to go along with it. He snuck onto the floor and began getting his evidence.
Before he could make it out, he was caught by the general manager, arrested, and sentenced to one year for criminal trespass.
That year was hard and lonely, but enrolling in an inmate dog training program helped. And, once he was released, he managed to get a job as an animal care technician at the local shelter.
Not long after working there, he was taken with a three-legged husky mix who had been at the shelter too long despite being essentially a puppy. He decided to adopt her and train her to be his service dog for mobility and anxiety. He named her Laika.
A year later, she passed her certification test, and they keep (mostly) out of trouble while Cas finishes his journalism degree online.
