James was already gone. Linnet stammered to a halt, her hands clamping once again to the sides of her head as though that would help hold her together. She was terrified of what she was capable of doing, and of what she had wanted to do. The very thought shook her to her core.
Drake’s words were like a jolt of icy water, snapping her back to the present moment. She grimaced at him, her teeth gritted and eyes angry. She soon remembered she had stabbed him at some point, and her eyes flickered to the ornamental sword that still rested on the floor close by. From the accumulated blood, on the floor, the wardrobe, even dribbled down Drake’s chin, it was clear that he had probably been trapped there the whole time. He didn’t seem terribly happy about it either.
Linnet lowered her gaze uncertainly, almost guiltily. She dropped her hands from her head and moved to get up, very aware of her proximity to the displeased demon. Still, her thoughts were mostly on James, and where he may have run. Linnet wanted to reassure him somehow that she wouldn’t hurt him. Worry was painted clearly on her face as she hesitantly passed by Drake, wary of his movements.
She walked slowly through the anterior room, avoiding the scattered objects. She was faintly aware that James had to be close, though she had unknowingly clamped down on her soul sense. She could not afford to lose control. It would only make things worse. She gingerly approached the door, afraid the very sound of her steps would scare him off.
She shyly peeked only her head into the hall, her fingers gripping tightly on the frame in an effort to ground herself further. She called out, as soft and soothing as she could manage, “James?”
She took a shuddering breath to compose herself before she could continue. “James, I… I’m--” she cut off, her excuses suddenly seeming too hollow to voice. Her gaze dropped, her fingers clenching harder against the frame.

James was hunched over, prepared to run, and he drew even lower to the ground as he smelled her come nearer again, his anxiety on fire. Just waiting for her to whip around that door frame. That wasn’t what happened, though. He shuffled back a few steps as the top of her head came into view, and then her face. It was soft. That alone made him hesitate, but then she opened her mouth. She spoke in a soft voice, with purpose and meaning. And then she spoke again, and cut herself off, and looked away.
It...what?
Had she...had she...was that why Drake had called? Had he set her off again when he came in? Already low to the ground, it didn’t take much for his knees to hit the floor, his mouth parted in confusion and his eyes still fixed on the girl in the doorway. Was she...was she back?
James hiccuped once. It was all too much. The stress of the last few minutes. The stress of the last few days. The stress of the last few months. But she was back. She was okay. Everything was terrible, and she was stuck here now too, but she was okay. She was looking at him. Well, not right now, but she had been. And she’d said his name.
The boy’s hands found the floor, and his back crumpled up as tears welled in his eyes. It was all too much, but she was back. Linnie. Poor, sweet Linnie, she didn’t deserve any of this, but there she was. James cried, at first softly, the tears dripping down his face, but then he took a breath and was loud, eyes squeezing shut as he sobbed, partially from relief that this was over, some sort of normalcy would return, that Linnet had recognized him, and was at least a little bit more okay, but also in grief that he hadn’t dwelt in since the minutes after she was turned, before her feralism drove the realization from his mind as well. Things would never be the same for her.
But at least now, in this moment, she was okay.

James slumped to the floor and her eyes darted up, her concern apparent. She gave a small smile, more an upward twitch of her lips really, at James’s small hiccough. She allowed herself to step slowly into the hall, not relinquishing her hold on the doorframe. She was still too unsure of herself, too nervous about what might happen. She felt in control, but she was so terrified of losing her grip and harming James.
Then James seemed to crumple. She realized he was crying, the tears quickly turning to full on sobs. Her heart wrenched painfully in her chest as tears threatened to well up in her own eyes. She bit down on the inside of her cheek, forcing them back. Her guilt threatened to overwhelm her for doing this to him. She hardly deserved his tears.
She finally released her hold on the door, and her hands clenched hard enough for her fingernails to gouge into her palms, drawing blood. She wanted to comfort him, to apologize and promise never to hurt him again, but for now the words would not come. Tentative steps brought her forward until she stood near his left shoulder. She kneeled, her hand tentatively reaching out toward his hunched form, but she retracted it before actually touching him.
“James… Sir James… I’m so sorry,” she said, her voice thick with unshed tears. She looked away, trying to keep her composure, trying to allow James to cry without her unneeded interference.

He didn’t notice her come closer until she was right beside him, speaking. He started, looking over at her, trying to reign in his tears. He sniffled, rubbing at his eyes with a sleeve, and offered her a watery smile, faint and vague but still there. His eyes were red from crying, and his face was wet, not to mention the front of his shirt from where Drake’s blood had gotten all over him. What a mess. He slowly sat back up on his heels, taking a few deep breaths to calm down. Once his head was no longer spinning, he swallowed hard and let his shoulders untense.
She’d apologized, but she had nothing to apologize for. It wasn’t her fault. She shouldn’t think it was her fault, she had no control over herself when she was like that, he of all people understood. He’d lived it too, after all. And they were both fine now, no need for her to be upset. If anyone should be apologizing, it should be him for not protecting her, for letting Drake instigate the whole mess in the first place. She’d been almost free, almost out of the whole situation, but he’d pulled her back in and what had he done to stop it? Nothing.
The boy sniffled again, reaching out for her hand. He trusted her. Even if she did revert, he’d be okay. He could take it. And then he slowly shook his head at her, pointing insistently at his own chest with his free hand. She didn’t deserve any of this. If only he’d taken better care of her like he’d promised to.

He grabbed her hand, and her wide, doleful gaze shifted back to his face. What she saw there wasn’t any sort of anger or blame, just trust. He shook his head, making it clear he didn’t blame her, but himself. Silly James. She tried to smile at him, to somehow convince him that it wasn’t his fault either. Her mouth opened slightly, but no sound came out. Linnet’s reserves broke down without warning, her face scrunching against the tears that instantly welled up.
She gave his hand a slight squeeze, then let go, instead crumpling against him, her hands gripping at his shirt. Her head nestled against his chest while tears silently rolled down her cheeks. There was no sound but her small gasping breaths as she sobbed into his shirt front, releasing some of the pent up energies from the last few days, some of the fear.
His touch, his intoxicating closeness, was disconcerting in multiple ways, but she wanted so badly to offer him some form of comfort, even as she sobbed against him. Her sobs gradually tapered as she mentally pulled herself back, not willing to fully lose control in any way. She ignored the stickiness of his shirt, simply remaining close.

James’s already wide eyes widened further as Linnet slumped over onto his chest, clutching his torso. He returned the gesture, one hand behind her head and the other between her shoulder blades as she began to cry quietly, her chest heaving. She was certainly overwhelmed. And he was not particularly surprised that it didn’t appear that Drake was helping in any way at all, judging by the force with which she’d pinned him to the wall, he’d probably been harassing her. If only he could talk to her, just tell her everything. Did she even know yet? What did she remember?
The boy ran his fingers through her hair slowly. His nerves were still running a bit high due to her nearness, the last time she’d been this close it hadn’t ended well for him, but he was in control of himself. He was fine. As her soft sobs subsided, he made a soft humming noise, resting his cheek on the top of her head. He appreciated that she was here. That she was okay. Even though he couldn’t communicate it, he could try.
“Aw, well, this is cute,” Drake spoke up. He’d been observing for a few seconds before he decided to interject, leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed over the huge bloody spot on his abdomen. “But I’ve been stuck to a wardrobe for quite some time, and I’m a bit hungry, so I think I’m going to go find food, so I’ll leave the two of you to your weird cry-fest.” He straightened, turning to walk the opposite way down the hall, looking over his shoulder at the two.
“James, need anything?”
James lifted his head and made a few one-handed signs.
“Yeah, yeah, love you too, kid, I’ll be back in a few days.” He waved a hand.
“And you, Linnet, I swear, if you break anything else in this house, I will lock you in your room for a week. No. Two weeks. So don’t even think about it.” With that, he disappeared around the corner.

Linnet gave a small start as Drake made his presence known, slowly sitting up, her arms dropping back to her sides. She watched him warily, her form tensing at his tone. And then he just as abruptly left, proclaiming that he would be gone for a few days. Linnet stared, caught off guard, until he was out of sight. Outwardly, she seemed to relax, bit by bit. Still, she felt as though she were clamping down. Something within her still yearned to lunge at James, but she savagely repressed the urge. She would not hurt him. She couldn’t bear the thought.
She haltingly rose to her feet, wiping at her tear-streaked face. She clamped a hand tightly around her wrist as she continued to stare blankly down the hall for a moment. Though she knew she needed to find out what had happened, and what had caused the change in her, she was reluctant. If she asked, there was no going back. Or that is at least how it felt. Deep down she knew that something had changed, whether she wanted it or not. She needed to know.
“James?” she said. As his attention turned to her, she suddenly lost her resolve. She took a step back before she realized it and stood still again. “I-- I’m glad you’re back.”
She dropped her gaze, knowing that wasn’t what she truly needed to say. Trying to cover she attempted to flash him a smile, but the worry behind it made it seem less genuine. She could not make her eyes meet his. She took one step back, then another, before turning away and starting to walk down the hall. She looked back over her shoulder, giving James a reassuring look. If he wanted to come with her, she didn’t mind, but she wasn’t demanding his presence. She simply needed movement, some way to distract herself. One foot in front of the other, as always.

The world seemed to skip. One moment she was sitting with James, back resting against a wall somewhere on the first floor The next she found herself staring out a barred window, looking down at the grounds from the second story. She gasped, her heart suddenly pounding hard as she gripped the window sill with white knuckles. Her gaze darted around until she found James. He was close by, and didn’t seem to be concerned or harmed. She returned her eyes to the window, forehead pressing against the glass as she took several deep breaths, trying to calm herself. She was relieved that she had not lost control of the hunger, but couldn’t help her panic whenever she seemed to lose time.
Trying to allay James’s worry, she gasped out a hasty, “I’m fine, I’m fine.”
She shook her head lightly, but couldn’t manage a smile, the tension of her form making her words seem hollow. The feeling she could only describe as hunger was still there, but it was far deeper than mere hunger. It seemed to pull at her being, feral and savage. Even just thinking about it now seemed to strengthen its hold. She trembled slightly, her eyes shutting, trying to concentrate on pushing it back down. She couldn’t keep hold, James was too close, too alluring. She bit down hard on her cheek, hoping the pain would help her regain clarity. It didn’t work this time.
She whirled away from the boy and ran, trying to get some distance as she raced through the hall and down the stairs. She didn’t stop running until she could no longer feel him and was able to clamp down on her soul sense once again. She shut herself in a room, her head pressed against the door as she panted. It took a long time for her to regain control, made harder by how distant she felt from her actions, but she eventually calmed. Once she was able to detach herself from the hunger, she left the room, cautiously venturing out to seek James again.

It had been fairly quiet, these past few days. Linnet seemed frequently troubled, but what could he do? He could barely even ask her what was wrong beside tipping his head and whining quietly at her when she made nothing other than a vague assurance that she was okay. He tried to linger nearby as much as he could, often napping in warm spots and sleepily keeping an eye on her. It did feel good to have some rest, even though sometimes when she moved too suddenly it made him jump. But he trusted her strength. When she ran, he looked after her retreating back, eyebrows knitted, but he did not follow. Wasn’t it ironic that Drake had initially intended for her to be the object of his uncontrollable, hungry temptation, and now, here they were.
It seemed that she liked to pretend like nothing was happening though, so he remained by the window, leaning his head back against the wall to have another nap. He could play pretend as well, if that was what she needed from him.
For a little while longer, at least.
After four days, Drake returned, looking rather pleased with himself. He’d taken the cart, to expedite his expedition, and returned with enough humans for everyone to have a full soul for the first time in a good three months. He was whistling to himself as he carried the three into the house, two over one shoulder and the other dragging behind him. What a good haul. And everything would calm down now, too. His James was back, and Linnet was no longer destroying any personal property she set her destructive little eyes on (hopefully.) Things would change, of course, but perhaps not for the worse? Of course, it would be unwise to stock humans in the house this early on, Linnet certainly wouldn’t be prepared to deal with that many human souls while she was still but a fledgling, but they had time. And of course, he’d need to make sure she knew how to read and write (he had low hopes, judging by her accent he’d be lucky if she knew how to spell her own name) and of course, James would be more than pleased if she learned his language as well. It would be busy, and the demon was quite excited.
He dumped the humans off in the little sitting room beside the front door. They probably wouldn’t wake for a bit. It looked like one had a bit of blood dribbling down from her ear though, she might not last too long. He’d need to find James before any of them died and he lost the souls.
“James? Linnet? I brought food!” He called out as he headed deeper into the manor, an edge of cheer in his voice.
James had been curled up on a sofa in the first floor sitting room where he could peer out the windows to see the roses in the garden idly bobbing their heads in the wind, pretending to read, though he was closer to napping than he’d admit. He still managed to glance up at Linnet occasionally to smile at her, though he was really checking to see how tense she was. Even though he was occasionally nervous, he was rather pleased that he was a better actor than she was. She didn’t need his worry piled on to her own, even if his worry was mainly about her and how she was doing, rather than any potential for her to attack him again. She hadn’t done it yet, and even if she did, he knew that Linnet was still in there, that she was close to the surface. He could help her now, if she needed it. It’d be fine.
When Drake neared their wing of the home, still calling out, James’s head immediately lifted up, looking in the direction of his voice. Then he glanced at Linnet with an apologetic tilt of the head in a ‘you should come too’ sort of manner. Then he hopped off to find Drake. He was getting rather hungry, half souls certainly prevented him from dying, but he still craved the satisfaction of having one all to himself. Although...Linnet hadn’t asked him any questions at all, and he couldn’t decide what that meant. Had Drake explained everything, or nothing? How would she respond to the whole soul thing, anyway? Well, she needed to eat, and even though he felt bad, he’d feel worse if she tried to starve herself.
James turned a corner out in the hall and ran directly into Drake, who immediately scruffed his head and picked him up. “Hello there, James, did you miss me?”
James made a face, and Drake laughed. “Oh, don’t be rude,” he said, before looking around. “Where’s Linnet?” When she came into view, he gave her a half-smile, hitching James up higher in his arms. “Ah, there you are. Did you and James have a nice time catching up?” He turned to start walking down the hall again, making a gesture for her to follow. “Come on, then, I brought food, and this one will be special for you, since it’s technically your first,” he grinned, “so you better appreciate all the work I did, bringing food to this table, little miss.”

Linnet spent most of her time trying to distract herself, to avoid the uncomfortable questions for which she had no answers. She was tempted to try to ask James for some answers. Though he could not flat out tell her, he could at least give her some idea of what had happened. Still, Linnet was unable to make herself start the conversation. Perhaps she just couldn’t make James the bearer of what she was sure would be bad news. She was worried, and as much as she tried to pretend otherwise, it showed.
James tended to stay close, his presence both comforting and distracting. It forced her to get a better hold on herself, as scary as that process could be. There were several times that he moved suddenly, startling her just enough that her gaze jerked to him or she took a quick pace toward him. She was always able to slam her walls back in place, but it left her trembling and weak-kneed. There were times when he flinched away at her normal movements, too. It always felt like being struck, but served to strengthen her resolve. Even if she was unable to ask what had happened to her yet, she could at least focus on controlling herself for James’s sake.
She infrequently spoke to the boy, asking innocent, irrelevant questions, or making small comments, but she always tapered back into silence. She had so little that was worth saying in any case. She was too busy trying to figure out her own mind. If she thought through things, she could probably make a good guess at what had happened. She had all the clues, and more vague, frightening memories were returning than she would have liked, but she was simply not ready yet.
Linnet heard Drake almost the same time that James did. Her eyes flickered up to the noise, then to James’s face as he tilted his head and moved away to find Drake. Linnet tensed, clasping her arm at the elbow and rubbing slightly, as if trying to fend away a chill. She hesitated, but soon followed after James. She looked like she was walking toward her death sentence, her feet shuffling somberly and her eyes fixed on the floor. Maybe in a way she was. As much as she didn’t want to think about it, she could not help but wonder what it was that Drake had done to her. The question repeated in her mind over and over.
She watched, keeping a slight distance, as Drake greeted James and picked him up. He turned to address her and she visibly flinched back a step, just as quickly stopping and holding her ground. He turned, motioning for her to follow, talking about food. She tensed, her head coming up and her eyes fixing as she noticed the presence of souls. It was strong enough that she almost forgot herself, taking a few steps forward. Her heart thudding, she ground to a halt, her hands grabbing at her skirts. Her mind was in chaos, demanding that she feed herself, but she pushed the hunger down. Her vision slowly cleared, and she knew she had to find out what Drake had done to her. No more excuses.
“Wait,” she called out. “What.. What did you do to me?” Her eyes jumped up to the white-haired demon, a stubborn air about her. “I won’t do nothing else ‘til you tell me what's happened,” she demanded, already tired of that arrogant tone.

When she spoke, Drake stopped short and turned around again, lifting an eyebrow. Her voice was strong, obviously displeased. Even James straightened, looking between the two. When Drake didn’t immediately look at him, the boy papped his cheek with the back of his hand to get his attention so he could sign.
/You not tell her any?/ He narrowed his eyes slightly, even though he was pretty sure he already knew the answer.
Drake shrugged. “I tried, but she kept running away, and then the whole stabbing thing, you know, it didn’t really help my ability to provide steady discourse about the state of the manor. Not my fault, James,” he complained, ducking his head a little.
He took a deep breath, turning his gaze back to Linnet as James rolled his eyes. “Well, long story slightly less long, you set the library on fire and I got mad and attacked you, sorry about that, by the way, won’t happen again, probably, and then you were about to die and James wouldn’t kill you so I fed you a soul and then you went absolutely crazy, which is completely normal, don’t worry about it, you have no idea how many people James killed when he was like that,” Drake laughed and James frowned, looking at the floor, “and for three months I looked after you while you tore the devil out of this house and also occasionally James, and then here we are, you’re just like James now, sorry if you don’t like it but you’re stuck with us, little friend, and that’s that.” Silence for a beat. “Can we go eat now? If you haven’t forgotten, I was stuck to a wardrobe for something like two days, I’m a little hungry.” Everything came out in one long, breathless sentence, and Drake seemed slightly bored as he recounted it, and once he finished he turned around again to continue down the hall.

Linnet watched carefully as Drake and James interacted. James looked rather incredulous as he got Drake’s attention, his hands flitting through odd motions. She wasn’t sure what James had said, but Drake immediately brought up that she had stabbed him and it sounded like he was making some sort of excuse. He turned back to her, launching into a long winded explanation that left her reeling. His words triggered small, vague flashes of memory that lent validity to his words, but left her rattled. Despite her distress, she did her best to keep her mind on what he was saying. She already regretted asking, but she had little choice in the matter. In any of it, really. Drake had attacked her, and had almost killed her, but had somehow fed her a soul. She found herself rubbing at her neck without realizing it and dropped her hand. Her mind flitted back to when James had tried to mime out how he had become what he was. So Drake had fed him a soul ... and her too. Drake had made her a soul-eater, like James.
She felt numb and horrified, all at once. It had been three months since that night; three entire months where, to use Drake’s words, she had been absolutely crazy. She had hurt James. It was no wonder he had acted the way he had. She knew Drake was right, she was stuck. The evidence was in that ever present hunger. She wished that it somehow wasn’t true, but there was no way it wasn’t. Tears began to leak from the corners of her eyes. She dropped her head and stared at the ground. It was too much for her to process all at once, and her mind whirled with it, making her feel off balance. Drake tried to continue moving down the hall, but she felt rooted in place. Everything pulled at her, but she stubbornly refused to go along with Drake, or to run away. Drake continued walking, but she had already connected that he had brought people here in order to eat their souls, in order for her to eat a soul.
She wouldn’t look up or move as she started speaking. “I won’t do it. I won’t, I won’t,” she asserted, her voice quivering. Tears still dripped down her cheeks, falling to the floor unnoticed.

At her next outburst, Drake stopped again, but this time did not turn around, instead regarding her over the top of James’s head. He let out a longer sigh, clicking his tongue at the tears dribbling down her face. “Oh, don’t cry,” he said, but it came out significantly more annoyed than he’d meant it to...sort of. James was trying to struggle out of his grasp now too, and he had to switch arms so he could continue looking at the girl without his companion getting in the way. James wiggled a bit more before giving up under the iron pressure of the demon’s arm and heaving a sigh, his eyes fixed on the crying girl.
“Listen, Linnet, you don’t have much choice in the matter. You’ve been eating them for three months with no trouble. Why start getting all upset now?” He paused for a moment, flicking a hand in the air. “Anyways, you should be grateful, after all the trouble you’ve caused I’ve still taken care of you. I could kick you out, if I wanted to, watch you slowly starve to death, but no. I’m looking after you. I’m finding food for you. I’m not even asking you to hunt for your keep right now, what is your problem?”

Drake scolded her for her tears and a look of surprise crossed her features. She wiped a hand across the back of her eyes, glaring at him for just a moment before her eyes dropped again. She hated him seeing her cry, and couldn’t bear looking at those haunting red eyes that always seemed to taunt her. She was angry and afraid, and she felt so utterly trapped.
Her eyes widened at his statement. She had no way to deny it since she had no solid memory of the past three months. She felt queasy at the thought that she had eaten souls. It was the very thing that she had been most terrified of happening to her, before she had been turned. Realizing that she had done the same thing to other people was, in a word, horrifying. How could he have done this to her?
He went on about how she should be grateful, as he seemed to do far too often. At that moment, she hated him more than she had ever hated anyone. Livid eyes jerked up, fixing on Drake’s face. Her hands trembled with the adrenaline that was starting to course through her. She took a few steps forward, her paralysis erased by her anger and her tears dried with the heat of her fury.
“What's my problem?” she spat out, angry emphasis on each word. She pointed a finger at his chest, jabbing toward him to punctuate her statements. “You stole me from me life, trapped me here. I had to murder to survive ‘cause of your blarsted game.” Her anger grew colder, as she drew herself back and tried to regain control. She paused, taking a shaky breath before continuing, “What's wrong with me? I’m stuck in this nightmare and can’t wake up.” She ended in a near whisper, her hands clenched. Her accusing eyes centered back on his face. “All I wanted was to die in me own way, and you took even that away from me.”
She started to back away, her body language making it clear that she was tempted to bolt. As much as she wanted to get away, she knew she would not be able to escape the horrible truth.

A goading smile curled across Drake’s face as she began to speak, her anger very evident. He’d forgotten how much fun it was to rile her up. She made all her still so human complaints, ‘oh no, I had to kill someone, oh no, I wanted to do things my way.’ He hoped her schtick wouldn’t get old before she finally grew out of it, because her anger was so entertaining. James had never had the chance to do this, he wanted to see just where he could push this girl. It would be fun.
“Oh, poor Linnet,” he said as she backed away, staring at her unblinkingly. “But you know, if I hadn’t have grabbed you, what would have changed? You were just a dirty little urchin child, you would have died within three years, at most. You can’t keep thinking like a human, Linnet, this is much bigger than that.”
