Linnet's level of panic only increased as Drake shifted to look at her face. The positioning, similar enough to elements of that horrifying night, only provoked more flashes of memories. She clenched her eyes shut a moment, hands pushing against him as though trying to ward him off.
She shook her head violently and spoke in a rush, almost screeching, "Please, I don't wanna die. I don't--"
He set her down and she stumbled back, her mind trying to return to the present moment. She clapped her hands over her ears, still rambling hysterically for a moment. She shut her eyes, not wanting to see Drake come after her as she fully expected he would. Slowly, she began to calm, her chest heaving as though she had run for miles. She cautiously looked up, expecting to be attacked, but Drake was still acting non-threatening. She glanced around, her mind starting to grasp that she was no longer in the library. She had no idea why, or what had happened since. It took her several long moments to build up the courage to speak.
"I.. I don' un'erstand. What 'appened? Whe--" Her halting words stopped as wide, nervous eyes fixed on Drake.

She staggered backwards once her feet touched the ground, but she seemed to stop screaming so much. Her hands were on her face, over her ears, eyes squeezed shut. She was obviously back to herself. Who was, as he'd forgotten over the last few months of living with a girl unafraid to jump out of windows and snap at him if he put his hands too close to her mouth, completely terrified of him.
When her huge, wary eyes turned back to him, the demon almost bust out laughing right there. It sure was Linnet all right. And she was obviously entirely disoriented. She remembered nothing. No wonder she was so frightened, if her last memories were leading up to her 'death,' it would be no surprise. James had been the same way the first few times he regained lucidity proper.
He let out a long sigh of relief as she strung words together in sentences that were not screeched. The exhale was followed by a few giddy bursts of laughter before he remembered himself and ran his fingers through his hair, appraising her again. "It's a long story. But I'm not going to hurt you, and even if I wanted to, it wouldn't serve much of a purpose anymore. You're safe, Linnet, you're...you" he paused for a beat, that giddy smile coming back, "James is going to be so pleased to see you, oh, well, you have no idea how torn up he's been, it's been a real mess, you'll see when he gets back, he's missed you terribly, and, and," he paused, dragging his hands down his temples to his cheeks, where they stayed, pressed against his jawbone on either side as he looked at her again.
"Well, we should probably go inside, you'll want to sit down for this. It'll be a lot for you to take in, all at once, I'd suppose. Especially after, well, I'm sorry for attacking you, but rest assured, you've been inadvertently gleaning your revenge, so please, if you could refrain from breaking anything, for just a minute, that'd be great. Super, actually. Just.... let's..." he took a half step forward, gesturing towards the house, "go."

It was all too much and she was hardly processing any of it. Her bewildered mind simply could not keep up with the steady flood of words. Drake's laughter and toothy smiling did little to calm her either. Finally, she simply could not handle it anymore. She turned and ran, though Drake seemed not to notice at first, words still pouring out from his lips. Linnet was trembling so hard, she did not know how she was still upright, much less running. Tears began to dribble from her eyes, but she hardly noticed.
Still, the motion of running itself was so familiar, she started slipping out of control again as she distantly caught the slight scent of a soul on the breeze. Her path veered toward the wall, her flight from Drake quickly turning into an escape attempt. Before she could completely lose her hold on herself, the approaching sound of growls and barking jerked her back. Fear restarted her awareness. She tripped to a halt, quickly locating the source of the terror-inducing sounds. Two large dogs were darting toward her, teeth bared. She turned and ran back toward the manor, looking for some way to escape.
The dogs were, obviously, very much faster than she. Linnet soon felt hot breath by her leg and let out a terrified shriek. They herded her toward the side of the house, nipping at her heels which caused more little shrieks of pain and fear. Soon, she was trapped in a corner with arms braced behind her, the dogs standing before her and growling at her every move. Before they could approach, however, the one standing closer suddenly lifted its head, letting out a worried whine. After a moment of scenting the wind, both dogs skittered away.
Her knees weak with relief, Linnet sunk down to a squat with her back still firmly pressed into the corner. She pressed her hands to her eyes, small sobs wracking her trembling form as her mind tried to catch up with all that had happened.

Oh. She was gone. When did she leave? Drake blinked, looking around. There she was, darting for the wall, several meters away. Maybe she hadn’t been as awake as he thought? He stood for a moment, slightly dumbfounded, a hand against his forehead in a 'I'm not exactly sure what to do in this situation, so I'll just stand here and watch in mild dismay.' She'd seemed so...awake, surely she couldn't revert from that so quickly?
Aaaaand here came the dogs. They usually didn't come over when he was nearby, but apparently Linnet had found a distance they didn't mind, and they were now going after her. Drake had to admit that he was curious to see what she would do in response to them. She hadn't seemed to mind such things as heights and guns, why would a dog be any different?
The little Linnet figure stopped short as the dogs barked, then she turned tail and ran in the opposite direction, headed back towards the house, screaming a little.
Oh.
It took Drake a moment to register that he should probably give chase before the dogs got to the very much awake Linnet, he could still hear her screeching even though she was out of sight. He hurried over to the place they'd disappeared, just in time to see the dogs fleeing his presence in the opposite direction, leaving a small and very frightened girl hunched against the wall. She was covering her face and very obviously sobbing.
Drake made a sympathetic sound as he neared, squatting down next to her crumpled up form. She barely seemed to notice his presence. "Hey, you're okay, calm down." His voice was soft as he reached out to pick her up. It didn't seem like she was in any state to do much walking. And since the odds seemed rather low that she'd bite him, though the danger of getting tear stains on his shoulder was much higher, he decided to hold her the way he usually held James, one arm under her and the other on her back, holding her to his chest. She really did seem to be in quite the state, because she didn't make much of a response to him. Poor girl.
"We'll go inside, does that sound good? Maybe you should lie down for a little bit, you'll be fine, don't worry," he said in a low voice as he carried her back into the house. Comforting her was surprisingly easy, he thought it would be different than taking care of James. Maybe it was because she wasn't responding. Or struggling. Or doing much of anything, really.
Her old room wouldn't do, that room was torn to oblivion, so he took her to one of the larger rooms on the second floor and sat her down on the bed. He stood for a moment, looking at her, unsure of exactly what he could do to help her, then left the room, shutting the door behind him. Instead, he lingered in the anterior room, sitting on one of the chairs with his forearms resting on his knees. She'd wander out again when she was ready, and he'd be waiting.

It was so difficult to see past the fear that permeated her thoughts. Everything had changed and she hardly knew where she was. All she could tell for certain was that she had not escaped. The most intimidating realization, however, was that time had somehow passed without her. That much was evidenced by the warm sun on her face and the fact that she was not in pain. She could have sworn that she had been injured, even to the point of being near death, but her mind seemed so determined to veer away from those memories. It made her feel so odd, disconnected, as though her body somehow didn't belong to her. Her current state certainly didn't seem to fit with the jumbled scraps she remembered.
Though her hands were pressed against her eyes, she could still feel tremors running through them. She could do nothing to stop it. She heard Drake moving beside her, talking to her. She wanted to jerk away, or even to just look at him, but it was as if she were just an observer. Her jaw clenched tighter, stifling her sobs. As Drake picked her up, her form tensed, but she made no further response. It was fortunate that he had a good grip on her because she made no move to be more secure. She could distantly feel Drake moving, carrying her somewhere, but she felt so separated from it, so distracted by trying to figure out what had happened. She was detached, cut off even from her memories.

At some point, she had lost time again. She realized it only when she found herself sitting alone on a bed in a large room. There was still an undercurrent of worry to her thoughts, but it felt more distant. It was like waking up from a nap and having to figure out what was going on all over again. Feeling dazed, she slowly uncoiled, trying to stretch out clenched limbs. Everything had a dreamlike quality, as though she would eventually wake up and find it hadn't been real at all. It felt as though she were merely watching herself cross the room and crack open the door, rather that actually participating in the action.
The sight of Drake sitting there, waiting for her, sent a chill of fear down her spine. She wanted to slam the door closed again, but she needed to figure out what was going on first. She wanted to bolt, but she felt frozen to the spot. Her eyes still darted toward the door of the front room, mapping out a way to escape. Drake was directly in the path she would have to take. She waited, her hand dropping to let the door swing a little wider open as she tensely watched to see what Drake would do.

Drake had been sitting patiently in the room, resting his chin on the backs of his hands. His current line of thought was puzzling through how exactly to call James home, since it was no longer necessary for him to spend the entire week out of the house. He deserved a bit of rest as it was, and Drake just wanted to see the look on the boy's face when he told him that Linnet was back. Certainly it'd make the boy happier, right? And then he'd stop moping around. It'd be good.
When he heard movement from within the room, Drake's head perked up and tilted to one side as he listened carefully. She was stirring. That meant she was okay, right? There was no sounds of destruction, and she sounded to be moving fairly slowly. That was a good sign. When the door opened, he did not move, waiting for her to move into his line of sight, but she did not. Was she just standing in the doorway?
He turned around, an eyebrow lifted in slight puzzlement. She was indeed standing there, staring at him. "What's the matter, then?" he asked, leaning back in the chair. Maybe her prolonged confinement in her one room had left some muscle memory? Perhaps she was confused as to why her door was not locked? "You're allowed to come out, Linnet, you're fine."

At first, Drake did nothing. The silence was expectant, both of them waiting for the other to act. A flare of stubbornness sparked up in her as he turned to look at her and spoke. Whether it was his intention or not, her mind could only interpret the innocent phrase as condescending. He settled back into the chair, not facing her, but she refused to move further into the room, mostly because he seemed to expect it.
In any case, she had no desire to get closer; she was still terribly unsettled in his presence. She felt oddly certain that no one else was nearby, though she had no idea why. All the unknowns in the situation were frustrating, building up a tension in her. It both pulled her back down to reality and made her want to simply flee. Something bad had happened, she was sure of it, but she could not pinpoint what it was. She almost didn't want to either.
All she did know was that she was frightened and growing more irritated by the moment. Almost as soon as Drake had finished his statement, trying to be soothing, she snapped at him, incredulous, "What's the matter? I'm fine?? Don't feel that way, do it? What the hell is going on? Where... where is everyone?"
Despite the anger behind their statements, she got quieter rather than louder as she spoke, her words choked by fear. By the end, she sounded like a desperate child, her eyes fixed on the floor. A hand clapped over her mouth and she choked back tears. She would not let him see her cry. She still had not moved, but she was fine with that. Let him move to accommodate her. It was a small way to get some sort of control, but it was all she had.

She was distressed, evident in her sharp tone. And she wasn't moving into the room. Drake sighed as he twisted around again to look at her. What was the problem? He'd told her that she was safe, for chrissakes. Why would he lie to her? And obviously he hadn't tried to attack her yet, so obviously everything was fine, right?
"Listen, Linnet, calm down, I'm not going to hurt you. Just..." Drake's gaze turned around the room, and an idea suddenly formed in his mind. "James! James calms you down, doesn't he? I'll just..." Drake popped to his feet, crossing the room to where a pair of ornamental swords hung. Technically they were supposed to be blunt, but he'd taken the liberty of making them useful again, though they were still far short of razor sharp. They'd serve his purpose though.
"Linnet," he said, his back to her as he stood on his toes to grab the sword without it coming down on his head. "I need to call James back here. You need to stab me Linnet, do you understand?" He turned back to her, holding the weapon by its blade, the hilt of it proffered to her. When she didn't immediately come forward and take it from him, he started advancing. "Straight through, it'll be easy, I promise. And then James will come back and everything will be fine, okay?" He continued talking as he moved closer, sharp end of the blade pointed towards himself. "I can't really do it by myself, it's such a strange angle, otherwise I wouldn't ask you to do it."
Well, she still seemed rather perturbed. She wanted him to let her leave. "Linnet, aren't you listening? Please, just, do this, then you can go, okay? Seriously, I--"

The way he jerked around to look at her made Linnet feel as though he was irritated. She flinched at the sudden movement, not raising her eyes. His words rang false. To her mind, it was still a distinct possibility that he could cause her harm. Her heart fluttered at her, speeding up as she fought off terrifying memories. It was so hard to process what he was saying, as though she were still trapped in her mind. Something about James. She struggled to jerk back to the present, to figure out what he had said about James, only to realise that he was pulling a blade off the wall. She staggered back a step, wide eyes focused on the sword that Drake held out to her.
He wanted her to stab him? It had to be some sort of trap, didn't it? All her coherent memories of Drake seemed to indicate that he had wanted her dead, by other's hands, or, in the end, by his own. Why this sudden reversal? And what could it possibly have to do with James? She backed away as he approached, vaguely shaking her head, hardly breathing as her fright weighed down on her. Soon, the bed was directly behind her, pressing against her legs and preventing any further retreat. She hunched, readying herself for whatever might happen.
"Please, lemme pass.. I.. I don't--" she said. Her eyes flickered to the open doorway as he cut her off, then back to his face. He continued getting closer. Suddenly it was all too much. Gritting her teeth, she lurched forward, grabbing the hilt with one hand and the crossguard with the other, twisting the blade vertically. She used her momentum to force him to the side at a slight angle, out of the doorway. The blade was heavy, but in one smooth motion she braced it against her own abdomen as she shoved it through Drake and firmly into the wardrobe door, narrowly missing his spine. She took a slight step back, releasing her grip.
Her frightened gaze swept from Drake to the door and she dashed through. It was then that it hit her, the painful sensation right below her ribs on the right side. She stumbled with a loud groan, tripping into a side table and knocking it and its contents over. A feeling of dread filled her. Her hand clasped tight over the pained area. The disoriented girl careened over the scattered objects on the floor and made it to the door. She pulled it open and fled down the hallway, deaf to all but the wild pounding of her heartbeat.

Aaaaand, she stabbed him. As much as he'd prepared for it, it still hurt quite a bit. He gritted his teeth around the groan of pain in his throat, trying to sum up a smile for the girl so she'd know that she'd done well. The blade felt so alien and immovable. His body was already trying to heal around it, but it couldn't--every time it reached the sharp part of the blade it split afresh, prolonging the discomfort radiating from the wound.
And then she ran away. "Wait, come ba--" he started to say, but then the blood that was welling up in his entrails decided to make a visit to the top half of his digestive tract, spilling out of his mouth. He coughed, the movement cutting even deeper into his gut, and tried to stand up straight. His body slid forward, still thoroughly impaled, the back of the sword stuck in the door of the armoire.
Drake groaned again, quickly leaning back against the wooden surface. Oh, that really smarted. And to top it off, he could hear Linnet breaking things in the other room. Typical. He shut his eyes, leaning his head back against the door, trying to regain his control over the situation. Or at the very least, control over himself.
He couldn't possibly get this sword out of the door by himself. He couldn't properly reach it from this distance, and even if he moved forward--which would hurt immensely--he would not have enough leverage to free himself. Just great. Maybe this was not the best of his plans?
So he had two choices. Hope that Linnet came back to free him, which was apparently unlikely judging by the fact that she was, for one, no longer here, and two, apparently hell bent on breaking every damn thing in the house. Or he could wait for James to get back. Which could take days. Of standing here. Bleeding out. What a great time.
By this point, his body was starting to get used to the pain. It was coming in waves, as if his body was perpetually forgetting that there was a sword stuck in it and then suddenly remembering again as it tried to heal and failed miserably. Thanks to that, he was still orally dripping blood to contribute to the deep stain that was forming on the armoire behind him and the carpet below from the central site of the wound.
"Linnie?" he called as soon as he could form coherent sound again, ignoring the twinges of pain along the outsides of the stab as he moved. "I'm.... a bit.... stuck."
She didn't come back.
Meanwhile, James was incredibly surprised at the sudden onset of pain in his gut. So surprised, in fact, that he slid out of the cupboard he'd been hiding in, stalking his next victim. The woman and her husband in the room turned around as soon as they heard the thump of the boy hitting the floor, jumping. They let out exclamations of surprise, moving to do something, anything about this intrusion, but James had already jumped to his feet, one hand pressing against the spot that Drake had been injured. It was time to get out of here.
The boy made his escape, taking refuge down an alleyway where he could think through the situation. He pressed his fist against the spot that still felt restless with pain, calling him home. Danger. Drake was in danger. And it wasn't going away. Maybe he'd fallen on something. Or Linnet got him good with a knife? Hopefully it'd stop soon, and he could get back to hunting. But he could barely focus on anything else with this pain in his gut, he'd have to wait. What had Drake even done to hurt himself this badly? It felt like it was all the way through.
Stupid demon.
Several hours later, when the pain had not yet subsided, James decided that Drake had to be in real trouble. He would have healed from this for certain. So that meant that either he was still being wounded, and he was trapped somewhere by someone, or that something else was going on that threatened Drake's healing factor. The boy paled at the thought as he started to head home, trying to look as normal as he could until he made it to the safety of the woods, where he shifted into a four-legged lope, bounding low to the ground for maximum speed and balance. It was tearing up his clothing, but he didn't care. He needed to get home.
Despite his urgency to return home, James needed several breaks. Not specifically because the pain was growing worse, actually, he was getting used to it, save a few occasional spikes of discomfort, but because his anxiety was deepening, and he couldn't focus on running with those thoughts buzzing through his head, so he needed to stop and rest until he calmed down.
When he finally got home, James looked a mess. His hair was mussed and he was terribly dirty and sweaty, but he was home. That was all that mattered. He hurried towards the source of the call--it had spiked again as he neared--not caring that Linnet was probably wandering around, potentially hunting him already.
The sight that met the boy at the source of the call was...strange to say the least. Drake perked up the moment he saw the boy, the blood dribbling down his chin layered with streaks of dried blood, a testament for how quickly his body regenerated its organics. There was a very large, fancy sword sticking out of him.
"James, please, would you let me out?" Drake's voice sounded very tired and rather resigned.
James obliged, tugging the firmly lodged sword out of the demon's chest. Drake immediately sighed and sank to the ground, and the wound finally healed, alleviating the pain from the three occupants of the house. James fell on his companion, wrapping his arms around the pale man's neck.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine, James, Linnet just stabbed me, nothing to worry about," he said, an ounce of acetone in his voice. Was he bitter? Yeah, a little.
James pulled back, lifting both his eyebrows.
"I know, right? I just wanted to call you, I've got a surprise for you, and she got a little overzealous with the stabbing, then just ran off before pulling the sword out." He paused for a beat. "Talk about rude."
James rolled his eyes and returned his face to Drake's shoulder, taking a few deep breaths to calm himself down. Drake was fine. Everything was fine. Who knew what Drake had up his sleeve, but he could take that in stride too. Maybe it meant he could have a bit of a nap before going back out?
All of a sudden, James felt a chill run up his back. He jolted upright, fingers tightening in Drake's bloody shirt. Linnet. He could smell her. His eyes found the door, watching it warily.
"What's the matter, James?" Drake asked, tilting his head slightly.

Linnet’s only thought as she ran was to somehow find somewhere to hide. She was so sure that Drake was going to come after her, even though he had been egging her on in the first place. Her frightened thoughts kept screaming at her to get away, to hide and never come out again. It was then, mid-escape, that her memories started trying to flit back. She felt as though she were living that hellish scene all over, as Drake shouted in her face, slowly strangling her. Odd flashes kept breaking in showing her incoherent bits of her time without lucidity. She couldn’t handle it. As suddenly as it had started, her flight had halted in the middle of the hall. She clasped her hands over her ears, gritting her teeth, trying hard to ignore the pain in her abdomen. Suddenly, her mind blanked. The girl who slowly stood up, taking in her surroundings, bore a completely different expression. The fear was gone, not even a memory remaining, replaced with curiosity. She rubbed vaguely at the area of pain in her belly. In an instant, even that morphed to a familiar hunger. She darted off, racing unsupervised through the manor.

Those two days passed in a haze. Linnet continually switched in and out of lucidity, struggling for control only to have it wrenched back out of her grasp. It was an agonizingly slow process, but little by little, she was getting control of herself as she adjusted to the hunger. Both it, and that strange, anxiety-inducing pain seemed never to dissipate.
There were still many times when she would find herself doing things, feeling oddly displaced as though someone else were controlling her body. She would find herself running with no idea where she was going. All she could discern is that she was searching for something. She had no idea what it really was, but she was starting to be able to manage herself.
Or at least she was until James returned. Linnet had hidden away, wedged in her familiar spot in the room by the servant’s stairs. She had been rubbing at the sore spot on her stomach, trying to sort through things while still keeping herself calm. It was a hard enough task as it was, until she started sensing something entering the manor. She had no idea what it was, but her feral side hardly shared that difficulty. James was immediately identified as the frustratingly undying soul she wanted so terribly.
Linnet struggled to keep control, but it was like trying to ride an unbroken horse. She huddled behind the couch for a few tense moments, quivering, before bursting into motion. The couch reluctantly jolted to one side, and Linnet burst from her hiding spot and out to the hallway. She took only a moment to locate the scent and launched down the hall.
After a few moments, Linnet once again had the feeling of being totally disconnected from her actions. Though she was running, she knew she did not want to be. She focused on that thought and, after several more strides, found herself juddering to a halt. She panted a moment, clutching at her skirts, but something was still niggling at her. Linnet tried to ignore it, but it still managed to break through her fragile calm. She burst back into motion only a minute later, once again lacking awareness of anything but the hunger.
Soon, she was approaching a familiar door. Though she was impatient to get to the soul, her steps gained a measure of caution. She stalked in noiselessly, crouching down to use the furniture to conceal her movements, not wanting to startle her prey. She angled herself toward the side of the door, trying to stay out of view as she lined herself up to pounce.
She inched closer, already salivating at the familiar scent that she knew would soon be hers. She was crouching by the door now. She shifted slightly so she could see inside. As soon as her eyes met with James’s, she lunged.

Linnet came to herself again as she felt herself peering through the door. James? James was here now? But he looked so startled. Suddenly, she realized with terrible clarity what her intentions were. He was scared of her, it was written all over his face, and all over her guilty conscience.
She lunged, she could not help it, but as soon as she did she was able to regain control. A shrill, “Nooo!” ripped from her lips as she made contact with James’s shoulders, knocking him off Drake as they both fell to the floor. She was rolling away from him almost as soon as they made contact with the hard surface, chanting a hasty, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m sorry!” She scooted back until her shoulders made contact with the bed, staring blankly at where James had been.

James hunched over as their eyes met, wanting more than anything to look away. But she was already jumping at him, a cold fist was already knotting in his gut. And Drake didn’t even move as she shrilled at him, knocking him off the other’s chest and on to the floor. He took the first opportunity to escape that he found, she rolled off him almost immediately, so he darted for the doorway, sending a wide-eyed look back at the strange scene behind him before skittering away, through the other room and out into the hall again, breathing heavily in short, rasping gasps.
Usually the best way to combat her chases was to keep her in sight, so she couldn’t cut him off. He could usually keep ahead of her, despite her hunger-fueled strength, and he felt safer knowing exactly where she was. Even when he was exhausted after running so far, he should still be able to out pace her. It was crucial now, when there was no soul to heal them back up. Why had Drake called him back?
